In lieu of an actual update

Posted on 2011.08.24 at 13:20
here is a collection of facebook updates, in reverse chronological order.

I have thirty-six tabs open. One of them is playing music. I DO NOT KNOW WHICH ONE.
It's pretty cool music though.

Thirsty Merc concert was brilliant. Got to hang out in the VIP room with the band and photographers and whatnot. Cuz I'm awesome like that.

Don't blink. Don't even blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast, faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and DON'T. BLINK.
Good luck.

He's like fire, and ice, and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He burns at the centre of time and he can see the turn of the universe. And… he's wonderful.

just had a test I had ENTIRELY FORGOTTEN ABOUT yay me

Today in space class I got to be a planet.
The lecturer was a star. I orbited and created star wobble so he could be detected from Earth. SCIENCE

I have started READING again.

I have a buncha books I wanna get to:
His Dark Materials trilogy
I Shall Wear Midnight, which I have had for ages but put off due to time and I hadn't yet read Wintersmith
a book of Edgar Allan Poe short stories I got at the used book stall at uni on Thursdays
an Asimov book I got at the same place
Dirk Gently, same place again
Thursday Next
plus Charlotte says I have to read Jane Eyre and Twilight.

Any other recs?

Just about finished To Kill A Mockingbird and Atticus Finch FUCKING RULES.

In other news, I was annoyingly woken up this morning in the middle of a dream where I had just pulled up to the Burger King drivethru (yes, my dreams really are this exciting). They were selling McDonalds softserve for some promotion or something. I remember there was a thing I wanted to get, but I couldn't remember what it was, and I realised after I woke up that it was the Double Down and I wouldn't have been able to get it anyway.

I think my brain was making fun of me.

also also HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIC!!!!!

cut for long-winded unnecessary nostalgiaCollapse )

tl;dr version: I have been a Whose Line fan since I was NINE YEARS OLD and tonight I TOTALLY MET GREG PROOOOOOOOOPPPSSSS

PROOF!Collapse )

He came down the hallway and I asked him for an autograph and he said sure, and I fumbled and he asked my name and wrote it when he signed my ticket and I said "I've been watching Whose Line since I was nine" and GREG said "Oh, don't get into ages, I'm old."

and he borrowed my pen to sign another autograph and posed for the photo and I told him that I watched the old Whose Lines and always loved it best when he was on, and he thanked me for coming out and I thanked him for coming to NZ and he was so kind and sweet and then I was in the same lift as him and walked out with him just cause I happened to be going that way too, and as he walked into the hotel across the road HE WAVED AT ME.

and now I just keep looking at that picture and going "GREG!!! :D" because OMG THAT'S ME WITH GREG PROOPS.

and I can't figure out why it won't stop being bold when I tell it but I don't care I;m going to bed.

This is the last day of my two-and-a-bit-week holiday and I have done NOTHING, which normally I would be in favour of but I haven't cleaned up my desk, I haven't looked at any Latin grammar except for the one tutorial on the first Thursday when the tutor gave me CATULLUS SIXTEEN to translate, AWESOME, I haven't even thought about the assignments for Issues And History In Popular Music, I've not been to the gym hardly, I haven't touched any musical instruments hardly, I just stayed on facebook and used up bandwidth, and my sleep schedule is messed up which I am not helping by staying up past one in the morning to post this. Blaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh.

But I watched Singing in the Rain and made popcorn, I made cookies just cause I felt like it, I went to the library for fun for the first time in ages and finally read Wintersmith, I wrote down some things that I have been meaning to for a while, I hung out with Mum. Today hung out with Mel and Paul and beat Paul's ass at pool.

But still. I had a bunch of things I wanted to do and I didn't get to most of them and now uni is starting up again and the time will just GO because it always does.

Rar I am just annoyed at myself.

This week: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, Mavis Staples (assuming I get off my arse and buy my ticket), Eli Paperboy Reed (ditto), Bob Dylan (again ditto what is wrong with this picture seriously Aisha). And a couple of Parties or Get-Togethers which I should probably Go To and See People etc.

Going to bed now.

So I've been noticing in both my own journal and communities that I haven't been able to see some comments even thought it says there are more comments there than are actually showing up. Instead I'm getting a place holder that says (Spam comment) or (Suspicious comment).

Why are these showing up like this you may ask? In their rush to fight spam LJ has created a new filter that're AUTOMATICALLY TURNED ON in ALL journals and communities, which screens comments that are made with 'suspicious links' ie links that are not on their safe whitelist, so pretty much the majority of the internet. There is no noted way to add to the 'whitelist'.

What really gets me is that they didn't inform people that they were doing this until a week after it was done and that it was automatically turned on.

So how do I turn it off you might ask.

That's simple. Go to your Settings, click on the Privacy tab, and half way down where it says Spam Protection uncheck the box next to "Comments containing a link to a non-whitelisted domain will be marked as spam and moved to a special section." This applies to both personal journal and communities and the opinion has to be manually changed in each one.

While I understand how this could be a good idea, I think they went about it in a very backhanded way, and have implemented it poorly. There was no message to anyone that the link has been screened. It's automatically done. This went on for over a week before they said anything about it. There is still nothing in the FAQs about it even. The only way I found out about this way going through the support pages where people were reporting similar issues.

Please share this!

ETA: This links really illustrates the problems.

Current Music: if JonandStephen can't help, nothing can.
Today's saving graces:

Latin tutor giving me Catullus 16 to translate, and buying me a milkshake.

Abusing free high-speed internet at uni to download Jon Stewart on SNL and stand-up.

Getting home before the worst of rush hour.

Mum made me a cup of tea.

Parts of today that meant it needed saving graces:

Which song makes you happy every time you hear it, and why?

This seems like a good way to stop not posting all the time.

I have many: American Pie, I'm Yours, She's Always A Woman by Billy Joel, Somewhere Over the Rainbow (the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole), Cheap Reward by Elvis Costello, Blinded By the Light (either version), Somebody to Love, Forty-Nine, and Bo Rhap by Queen, the Travelling Wilburys... I could go on.

So I shall.

If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out by Cat Stevens and Beside You by Dave Dobbyn always make me feel better. Similarly I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty.

Fuck You by Cee Lo Green because it's just SO MUCH FUN to sing along in the car!

Anything by Elemeno P or Midnight Youth, especially when on the radio and unexpected.

Anything sung by Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart (and I happen to think Jon can sing just fine when the pressure's off, so there, witness: that one time he sang with Elmo).

Anything with decent vocal harmony.

Most recently, I finally got this album last week and this song is adorable, I've had it stuck in my head for days.

I've never been very good at talking about Important Issues and Current Events an shit. So, whatever.

I've been doing some work for the census, going round houses delivering forms. Was delivering Tuesday, I got to one house and this woman was on the phone, asking her mum if she were watching TV. She says to me, you know there's been an earthquake? I say, no, where? She says Christchurch. I say oh no, I go through the spiel about the forms et cetera, make it quick so she can get back to the news, thank you have a nice day, on my way. I think didn't they, like, just have an earthquake? But that one wasn't all that bad, I mean it was bad but no-one died, right? Yeah. So, really rotten luck, but hopefully not too bad in the aftermath.

Couple hours later I go home for a bit, and the earthquake is on all the international news channels. Live footage from TV3 of people being rescued from seventeenth floor of the office building across the way from TV3 in Chch. Streets been torn up, the place has run out of ambulances, one guy got arrested for trying to help and putting himself and others in danger in the process.

So I watch that for longer than I mean to, head back out. Get home just after eight, exhausted, watch Top Gear. Dad gets home, puts on the news. Which tonight is on till eleven.

Next day I go out delivering again, the district supervisor meets me to come along to check that I'm doing everything right. She says the South Island census is postponed a few days, but the North Island is going ahead as planned. Accompanies me to a few houses, all good, goes on her way.

Half an hour later I get a call from her saying "don't deliver any more forms, it's all been postponed. There's a national state of emergency."

So yeah. Official death toll up to seventy-five last I heard, hundreds still missing. I don't have anyone I know or am related to in Christchurch. So that's something I guess?

Yeah, I don't really know what to say about this, other than it's terrible. You can help by donating to the Red Cross here. Please do so if you can.
